What Does Post-War Iraq Need Most? According To One TEDxBaghdad Speaker It Is Not Programs Or Propaganda, But Love.

Preemptive Love Coalition executive director Jeremy Courtney is speaking this weekend at TEDxBaghdad on what he believes to be most vital to rebuilding Iraq: preemptive love.

HEWITT, TX, November 12, 2011 /Texas PR News/ -- What is most essential to the reconstruction efforts in Iraq? Jeremy Courtney believes it is something called 'preemptive love.' As a founder and the executive director of the Preemptive Love Coalition, Courtney explains: "Preemptive is a word that implies jump- ing to do something in order to stop something else from happening."

A common usage of the word is in the phrase 'preemptive strike' - attacking someone before they attack you. This language was widely heard in America before the invasion in 2003. "We all know that violence like this unmakes the world. But preemptive love unmakes violence. Preemptive love remakes the world through healing," Courtney says.

It was this idea that led Courtney and a friend to found the Preemptive Love Coalition (PLC), a nonprofit dedicated to rebuilding Iraq's pediatric cardiac medical infrastructure by training Iraqi doctors and giving thousands of Iraqi children the heart surgeries they need to live to adulthood.

PLC accomplishes this by hosting surgical missions throughout Iraq. Each mission lasts two weeks, saves an average of 18 lives and provides thousands of hours of training for local medical staff.

"Our knee-jerk reaction is often to hurt before we are hurt. To get them before they get us. But preemptive love is about caring for the other - sometimes at our own expense."

Courtney will be sharing this idea of preemptive love at Iraq's first TED conference in Baghdad. Go here to view the conference in livestream.

Founded in 2007, PLC's mission is to create a medical infrastructure throughout Iraq capable of eradicating the backlog of 30,000+ children waiting in line for lifesaving heart surgery. To date, PLC has saved the lives of over 180 Iraqi children and provided local doctors with over 30,000 hours of hands-on training.
